ALGERIAN SLOUGHI SEMINAR
8th MGIBR seminar at the University of Tlemcen
MGIBR: Management and Genetic Improvement of Biological Resources
BY ALLA KACIMI EL HASSANI - ALGERIA
1. Introduction
Since 2018 I have been working on the subject of the Sloughi in Algeria, in order to help
save the last Sloughis that conform to the image I had of this very beautiful dog since my
childhood... when I visited the tents of Ouled Aissa, the Bedouins of the Aïn Errich region
with their Sloughis “S'foura” which is the plural of “S'far” meaning light sandy coat,
synonymous with originality and purity ...at the time there were no books or photos
available . ...Sloughis can be distinguished by their nostalgic but sharp gaze, short hair,
traced muscles, thin tails and a silence similar to the silence of cheetahs ...they were used
in my region for defensive hunting against jackals...the Bedouins I knew had no time for
hunting but the need to defend the herds.....40 years later...a return to childhood
nostalgia drives me to rediscover the Sloughi...
...at first I contacted an old friend to look for me for a nice subject from Aïn Errich...after
a long breath he confirmed to me that there is no more “Horr” (pure) left in this
region...alas...back to social networks and as soon as I typed the search word Sloughi, I
received an avalanche of information; too many groups, articles, pages, websites
thousands of photos hundreds of ads ...but no authentic Sloughi (image 0).
