3. Summary of the first day
In the large university amphitheatre, the seminar was opened by Pr. Meghachou, Rector
of the University of Tlemcen, who stressed the importance of the seminar and of the
Sloughi as a national heritage, and congratulated Professeur Gaouar and his team on their
work in this field. This was followed by a presentation by the Dean of the Faculty of
Natural Sciences, Prof. Mokhtari Soulimane, and Prof. Gaouar, Chairman of the seminar.
Both professors stressed the importance of protecting and promoting local breeds.
Dr. Ait Abdelkader from the University of Tiaret then gave a talk in English on breeding
techniques.
Dr. Mabunda from Cameron presented the genetic diversity of the local Boerboel breed
and the use of pedigree for its evaluation. Dr. Meutchieye presented an important socio-
economic study on dog breeding in Cameroon.
Representing the European continent, Mr. Rosenzweig reported on his trip to Algeria in
2017 and the specimens he encountered, giving his opinion on the superior quality of
Algerian Sloughi.
Ms. Bamford presented her sloughi-europe website, which attracted the attention of the
university's students and researchers.
The presentation by Dr. Haddam, the seminar's organizer, attracted a great deal of
attention as it dealt with an important subject: DNA analysis of the Sloughi. The results of
his work were presented and discussed by the participants.
