Seminar launch
This is the eighth international seminar organized by the Laboratory for Applied Genetics
Research in Agriculture, Ecology and Public Health, part of the Faculty of Natural and Life
Sciences at the University of Tlemcen, on May 25 and 26, following those on animal
production, plants and microorganisms, camel milk, dromedaries, medicinal plants, start-
ups in agriculture and the “between student and entrepreneur” seminar.
During these two days devoted entirely to the development of canine resources in
Algeria, and in particular the preservation of the Algerian Sloughi, researchers and
professors from the universities of Sétif, Blida, Tiaret, Tissemsilt and Sidi Bel-Abbès, as
well as veterinarians, breeders and dog training specialists, were invited to take part;
breeders and dog training specialists have been working on morphometric and genetic
characterization and canine reproduction, to safeguard this canine breed with
Maghrebian origins. We are seeking to launch a morphometric and genetic
characterization program for the development and reproduction of canine breeds in
Algeria.
These days shed light on the history and breeding of this dog breed, the Sloughi, which is
unfortunately threatened with extinction, knowing that it involves a whole range of
know-how. Meetings are being organized with stakeholders to identify concrete actions
and measures to enhance and regenerate domestic animal genetic resources, particularly
purebred Sloughis, explained Pr. Souheil Gaouar, director of the research laboratory.
Meetings are organized with Algerian scientific partners, researchers and breeders or
owners, to support them and raise awareness of the breed. The laboratory has already
characterized the metric and genetic composition of certain canids as part of the project
carried out by Dr. Youcef Haddam, working under the supervision of Prof. Souheil Gaouar
