advertising in the mid 1990’s. He also put in
personal appearances at the indoors bowls
championship sponsored at the time by the
insurance firm and which featured amongst the
competitors the Chairman of the Kennel Club.
Another dog Andy (Edstrong Trevan) appeared
in the film “the Waterhorse” which entailed a
week on location in Scotland.
There were also television features and even
a radio interview in which my bitch Edstrong
Pendogget registered her audible appreciation
of the political leaders of the day. That one made
Radio 4’s ‘Pick of the Week’
In the 1970’s I and my parents joined the
committee of the Junior Bulldog Club, my
mother eventually becoming Patron, a position
she held until her death in 2017. I also joined
committee of the London Bulldog Society
becoming Show Manager in 1976, Editor of its
magazine “the Bulldog Broadsheet” since 1986
and its Secretary in 1993.
I started judging in 1984 and awarded CC’s
for the first time in 1991 at Bournemouth. In
2018 age and inclination prompted me to ‘move
upstairs’ to the judges roll of honour which
means I can be wheeled out when a referee,
umpire or panelist is required - same kudos less
work.
As I look back on my life I realize that all but
one of its close on nine decades has been
dominated by bulldogs, club administration and
shows. At a time of unprecedented inactivity,
it is comforting that when life resumes some
normality I shall be able to return to my greatest
interest with the added hope and excitement of
some young Edstrongs just waiting to be got into
the show ring.
