MANUAL HANDLING
SUMMARY OF CONTROL MEASURES:-
● Plan the work task to avoid the need for manual
handling;
● Manual handling tasks must be planned and
organised;
● Refer to Manual Handling Risk Assessment;
● Use mechanical lifting aids wherever possible;
● Use forklifts, pallets trucks etc.;
● Anyone involved in manual handling tasks must
be trained;
● If manual handling cannot be avoided consider:
● Task: - does the task involve bending,
stooping reaching high, bending low,
twisting, travelling long distances, is the
task repetitive etc.
● Individual:- physically fit, age, height,
weight, gender, medical history of back
injury etc;
● Load:- is the load heavy, light, eccentric
shape, awkward to handle, sharp, cold etc.;
● Environment:- will the task involve work in
high or low temperatures; extremes of
temperature, high humidity, dusty
atmospheres, poor lighting, etc.
● If manual handling cannot be avoided, plan all
tasks thoroughly;
● Use lifting aids as much as possible;
