Access to excavations

• Excavation sides must be supported,

benched or battered to prevent
collapse.

• Visually inspect excavations before the

start of every shift.
1. Safe Access and Egress
• Excavation edges must be fully
guarded and toe boarded (edge

protection provided so person and
material don’t fall into an excavation).

• Safe means of access and egress to

all excavations whether it be
sloped/ramp walk way, secured
ladders / scaffold access etc.

• Dangerous atmosphere and flood risks
must be controlled.

• Check the SOP/Method Statement to

ensure that the agreed method is
being followed and that all permits are
in place.
