little  mistress  home,  she  had  received  a
                                        great  shock.     Over  and  over  again  dur­

                                        ing  the  drive  to  Delhaven  she  had  re­

                                        pented of  having consented  to Wilifred’s
                                        plan.    Wilifred  herself  had  been  too

                                        busily  occupied  in  devising  a  scheme
                                        to  give  happiness  to  Peggy,  to  realize

                                       how  much  deceit lay  in  It;  but  Peggy’s
                                       tender conscience  gave  her  no  rest from

                                       its  sharp  stings.

                                           As  she  stepped  out  o£  the  carriage  at
                                        Wilifred’s  beautiful  home,  she  was  a

                                       very  miserable  child,  and  the  terror  of
                                       the  dogs,  added  to  all the  other  uncom­

                                       fortable  feelings,  completely  unnerved
                                       her ;  so  that,  losing  all  control  of  her-

                                       self,  she  burst  into  a storm  of tears.

                                           It  was  anything  but  reassuring  to
                                        Peggy to  be  e 11 ught  up  in  the  Doctor’s

                                       arms,  although  in  the  tenderest  way,
                                       and  carried  up-stairs.        It  was  not  un­
