little mistress home, she had received a
great shock. Over and over again dur
ing the drive to Delhaven she had re
pented of having consented to Wilifred’s
plan. Wilifred herself had been too
busily occupied in devising a scheme
to give happiness to Peggy, to realize
how much deceit lay in It; but Peggy’s
tender conscience gave her no rest from
its sharp stings.
As she stepped out o£ the carriage at
Wilifred’s beautiful home, she was a
very miserable child, and the terror of
the dogs, added to all the other uncom
fortable feelings, completely unnerved
her ; so that, losing all control of her-
self, she burst into a storm of tears.
It was anything but reassuring to
Peggy to be e 11 ught up in the Doctor’s
arms, although in the tenderest way,
and carried up-stairs. It was not un
