When  Estelle,  Mrs.  Moran’s  French
                                       maid,  tapped  at  the  door,  she  was  so

                                       long  in  mustering  courage  to  bid  her
                                       enterj  that  the  girl  came  to  the  con­

                                       clusion  that  Miss  Wilifred  had  fallen

                                       asleep,  and  was  just  going  away,  when
                                       Peggy's  timid  L‘  Come  in !'  was  heard,

                                          Estelle  had  come  to  dress  her  for
                                       dinner,  and  many  an  exclamation  she

                                       uttered  at  the  tangled  condition  of  the
                                       child's  bright  locks,  and  the  unusual

                                       roughness  of  her  hands;  but  as  these

                                       were  made  in          French,  Peggy  was
                                      spared  any  distress  on  that  score,

                                          Peggy  made  her  first  acquaintance
                                      that  day  with  various  devices  of  the

                                       toilet.    When  the  process  was  over,
                                       Bstclle  led  her  into  another  room,  and

                                       left  her.
                                          Here  the  light was  so  subdued  by  the

                                      window  hangings  that  Peggy  hardly
