The building is situated in a calm residential neighborhood with average values
with regards to income and active working force . Apart from people walking their
6
dog or - probably - commuters, not many people can be spotted in the streets.
Within about 500m distance from the building, there are a variety of basic
amenities and services present in the neighborhood. There is a supermarket
(Delhaize), a pharmacy, a school, a nursery, a kinder garten, a bus stop, and a
small park. Further, there are some small grocery shops, a restaurant, a bi-
stro and snack bars nearby. The bus that passes at the stop around the corner,
Flagey connects the area to the city centre. Also the Etterbeek train station is within
walking distance, as well as some tram stops and shared bike (villo) stations.
Despite their presence in the neighborhood, these amenities are not necessarily used
by the current inhabitants of the building. As the prices of both the supermarket and
the small grocery shops are quite high, our interviewees prefer to go a bit further to
do groceries at for example an Aldi or a Lidl. Also for a walk in green spaces, they
leave the neighborhood, for example to Ixelles cemetary. Apart from the cinema to
which their entrance is facilitated by one of the temporary occupiers of the SeeU
premises in front, the neighborhood does not really provide for their daily needs.
One interviewee mentioned Flagey square as a location for meetings with others.
