Verbs – the present tense
Regular verbs
A dictionary gives verbs in the infinitive form. Often this ends in –er.
chanter (to sing) aimer (to like) habiter (to live) jouer (to play)
The present tense is used to talk about:
• what is happening now I am playing the guitar
• what usually happens I sing every day
• how things are I like spaghetti
chanter je chante I sing
tu chantes you (familiar) sing
il/elle chante he/she sings

Irregular verbs avoir to have
Some verbs are irregular. They don’t j’ai I have
follow the regular verb patterns. tu as you have

être to be
je suis I am
tu es you are
il/elle est he/she is
3 Fill in the gaps in these sentences, then 4 Unjumble the forms of être, then match them
