Early Learning Goals
Gross Motor Skills
Children at the expected level of development will:
• Negotiate space and obstacles safely, with consideration for themselves and others;
• Demonstrate strength, balance and coordination when playing;
• Move energetically, such as running, jumping, dancing, hopping, skipping and climbing.
Fine Motor Skills

Children at the expected level of development will:
• Hold a pencil effectively in preparation for fluent writing – using the tripod grip in almost all cases;
• Use a range of small tools, including scissors, paint brushes and cutlery;
• Begin to show accuracy and care when drawing.

Greatmphasis is place on enabling our children to experience a wide variety of activities from a
young age. As a result of this, sport, music and the arts play an important role in our curriculum. The
specialist lessons are covered in all the PRIME and SPECIFIC areas of learning. This will be reflected
in your MTP, however your lesson plan will focus more on the following:
• Physical Development
• Expressive Arts and Design
• Understanding the World

Early Years physical education improves more than just physical wellness. It also assists and
improves social and emotional development in children. The earlier the age PE is taught, the earlier
children begin to develop the ability to think critically.
