1.8. Definition of terms

For the word poetry, student teacher and second language as the key words. The word poetry is
defined as follows:

Poem: A piece of writing in which the words are arranged in separate lines,

often ending in rhyme, and are chosen for their sound and for the images and ideas they suggest
(Cambridge English dictionary).

Literature: Is writings in prose or verse especially writings having excellence of form or
expression and expressing ideas of permanent or universal interest (Merriam Webster

Dictionary).

Strategies: Is a general plan or set of plans intended to achieve something, especially over a long
period (Collins dictionary).

Poetry: Poetry is any kind of verbal or written language that is structured rhythmically and is
meant to tell a story, or express any kind of emotion, idea, or state of being (Ollila & Jantas, 2006).

Student teacher: A student who is in the process from being an observer at the beginning of the
teaching experience to assumption of the role of the full-time teacher by the end of the experience

(Thompson, Kootsikas & Shellenberger, 2014).

Second language: The Collins Dictionary defines Second Language as the language that a person
learns after his or her native language.

1.9. Conclusion

The section of the study initially focused on the introduction and background of the study. The
statement of the problem and objectives of the study were addressed. It further looked into the

significance of the study, limitation and delimitations of the study. Lastly the definitions of terms
was handled.
