improvement, knowledge expansion, intelligence sharpening, and general inspiration to mankind,
it deserves being instituted into the school curriculum as an autonomous and compulsory academic
discipline (Josephine, 2013).
Literary narrative (story), like poetry, can take a descriptive or narrative form and structure. For
example, we find descriptive poetry and narrative poetry. The term text in literature refers to and
includes articles from newspapers, magazines, novels, drama, short stories and poetry. This should
mean that the student teachers when they go for internship they should be familiar with what is
required of them to employ from the syllabus under literature and particularly poetry. The above
information is so unambiguous that the student teacher do not need to struggle much when it comes
to the expectation from them.
Poetry is one of the literary text in which the words are used specially to express the writer’s
emotions, feelings and thoughts. It follows the metrical composition like rhythm, rhyme, meter,
tone etc. It has its special rhetorical devices like smile, metaphor, irony, paradox and so on. It
recognizes syntax, invents its own vocabulary, freely mixed registers and creates its own
punctuation. Definitely, the language of poetry makes student aware of the fact that language is
not always governed by the rigid body of rules. It develops student’s interpretative abilities and
creativity. Poetry follows a systematic way of classroom activities like stimulating student’s
cultural and historical background of the poem, helping students towards the interpretation of the
poem and follow up activities. Poetry is the highest form of literature expression. It appeals to the
emotion. It has an aesthetic effect on human mind. It must noted that poetry is different from prose
(Karki, 2016).
A study by Krishnamurthy (2012) on literature and the teaching of stylistic it was highlighted that
the study combines both the study of Stylistics as a discipline, which is the pedagogy of Stylistics,
and the use of stylistics for teaching literature in general and poetry in particular.
2.3 Teaching poetry by student teachers in Namibia
Before Namibia’s independence in 1990, the Cape Education Curriculum was used in Namibian
schools which made Afrikaans the medium of instruction in schools and also the official language
(Nandu, 2013). However, several changes were made after Namibia’s independence. These
changes of curriculum included the use of English as the medium of instruction.
