The early first period of NJE began at the same time with Reformation Era of
Indonesia with the background of the fall of New Order regime after the
socio-political turmoil due to Asian Economic Crisis 1997-1998. The post-shaken
economic and unstable social-political conditions due to governmental changing
could be felt in many parts of the country including areas (cities, towns, villages) visite
and served by NJE Team. For example, the first crusade at Sungai Ambawang,
approximately 1 hour by car from Pontianak,at that time, was conducted in a hostile
environment and highly-stressed situation. Many people went and took refuge in the
provincial capital city of Pontianak (West Kalimantan) due to social turmoil emerging
from the ethnic conflict between Dayak and Madura tribes.
On the other hand, the crusade at Kandis, Riau, was performed on the yard of
the church beside the main road of Pekanbaru-Dumai. Most of the attendants were
standing on the field while traffic moved fluently, often with the roaring machine
sound, on the street. Some of the passer-by on the street stopped and watched the
crusade as well. The crusades like this were also indicated by its minimal facilities,
sometimes without electricity and potable water. Spending the nights in a log cabin
without a bathroom and WC really gave a unique and unforgettable experience.
