in the nature of things, more authoritative. Lord Sumner definitely lays down the
law; you can hear it in his voice: it is his business to say ùThis is so,û not to
describe an event or sequence of events, and deduce what are known as causes.

And in legal prose we necessarily come upon jargon, technical terms, more often
than we do in scientific; one would not like to bet that after reading the
judgement we should all of us know exactly how far we were responsible for
the injury an infant did to himself when playing on our ground; nevertheless it

is to scientific prose (rather than purely technical) that legal prose can best be
