Meeting the King
JAXON ALMOST FALLS backwards on the floor. His mouth drops open.
“D-D-Dr. Martin Luther K-K-King!” he says a bit louder than he means to. “Wh-wh-what are
you doing here? D-d-did I wish for you too?” He gazes at the man whose face he’s seen in so
many books, on television, and in pictures in stores and people’s homes.
“Hello, Jaxon,” a deep familiar voice replies. “I understand you’re playing me in your school play
next week. And you’re working very hard in rehearsal. I am honored,” Dr. King says smiling.
Jaxon’s hands are shaking and his knees are too, a little bit. “Th-th-thanks,” he says. He takes a
deep breath to try to calm himself, but it’s Martin Luther King!
“I can’t begin to tell you how important your experience today and the experiences you
may have later, with other inventors and scientists, are going to be for you, your family, and your
friends.” Dr. King is looking straight at Jaxon. “Used correctly, you can learn a great amount of
history from that necklace.”
“N-n-no offense Dr. King, but wh-wh-why are you here?” Jaxon takes another breath.
“Everyone I’ve seen so far has been an inventor. Did you invent something?”
