I wouldn’t ask for a very big discount because I’m a businessman too. I know that a big
discount may hurt the business. I think a 15-20% request for discount is good. You may
ask for a bigger discount depending on the season and the kind of relationship you
have with the client. Favorable seasons are those times when supplies are cheap and
                  demands are not so high.

               1. You have to bargain with a client for a 20% discount. Use the reasons below
                  to compromise for a discount.

                 a. Your business needs some leeway to achieve your target profit.
                 b. This is the only special request in the deal.

                  Sample answer:
Good day, Mr. Stevens. I hope that our company will be given a 20% discount in our
deal. This discount will be truly appreciated by our company, especially since we need
to work double time to achieve our semiannual profit target. We have been partners
for a long time, so we hope that our favorable relationship can merit us this request.
This is the only request that we will be asking for you in this deal, so we hope that this
can be accommodated. Thank you so much!

               2. You want to get a 20% discount from your client because of the following
reasons. Do your best to convince him.

                 a. Increase in the prices of almost all supplies needed for manufacture
                 b. Workers’ strike affected profits and you need to make up for the lost mon-
                  ey

                  Sample answer:
Mr. Clark, I hope you understand that we are asking for a 20% discount because of re-
cent economic changes that greatly affected our business. The prices of our supplies
have gone up in the past weeks, and so we find it really difficult to maintain our prices.
The only thing we could think of to at least break even is to ask for a little discount.
What made matters worse is the strike that our workers had last month. Although the
strike only lasted for a few days, it has drastically affected our production. We have
fixed every issue with our workers, but we can still feel the repercussions of the strike.
Given these two valid reasons, we hope that our request for a 20% discount will be
                  given. Thank you very much!
