Chapter 6: Hobbies and Interests
Unit 8: Role Playing
Imagine yourself teaching a younger sibling about the basics in cooking. Try to
describe how you would be doing this and mention a particular dish related to the
cooking method.
Answer A:
Each one of us must learn how to cook at home. This is very important in planning a healthy diet.
Cooking methods are divided into two groups. One uses dry heat in cooking food while the other
uses moist heat. We will just discuss the basic ways. Let’s begin with the moist heat methods.
Boiling is the most common and easiest. Water is added to food then cooked over the fire. Rice
and other cereals are usually cooked this way. Next is frying. We usually fry food using cooking
oil in a pan. Make sure you have enough amount of oil and the right temperature when frying
food to cook it well and to avoid getting scalded. Stewing is boiling chopped vegetables, fruits,
or meat in water until cooked. Seasoning is added. Let’s move on with the dry heat methods.
To steam vegetables or other food, water is placed inside a pot in the lower section of the food
stand. Hot steam cooks the food and retains its nutrients. Roasting is applying direct heat to the
food. We usually roast meat, chicken or fish. Heat seals the outer part of the food and the juices
trapped inside gradually cooks the food. Baking is cooking food in an enclosed area like the
stove. Trapped heat cooks the food. Maybe, we could bake bread later. I hope you were able to
differentiate the different cooking methods. We could talk more about it while cooking our meals.
