Chapter 5: Spare Time Activities

                   Unit 3: Joining Clubs

Individuals join clubs to sharpen their skills or to advocate a club’s objectives. Try
to talk about a related experience and focus your discussion on your intentions in
          joining a club or organization.

              Answer A:
To get away from the usual hostilities between the forces of equations and a million of my
neurons, I joined the guitar club last semester. I was no guitarist. When the club officer asked me
if I had the talent to pluck those strings, I gave a shameful shake of the head. He smiled, and
told me that some of the members were not really good guitarists when they started, but with
their determination, they turned out to be fine. I was a bit hesitant because music wasn’t my forte.
However, since I was a kid, I’ve always yearned to play the piano or the guitar. I loved watching
bands perform on TV. “This is it,” I told myself. It’s the point of no return, the now or never
moment. When I graduate, I know I may never have the time to join clubs, not even the chance
to learn how to play an instrument. Thus, I grabbed the opportunity. I am considered a newbie
in the club until now, but the members are supportive. Each helps not only to put harmony in
our music but also to put harmony in our relationships. I think that’s the best advantage of being
               in a club like this.

              Points to emphasize in answering:

Introduce the club you joined in.
[example: I joined the guitar club last semester.]

Tell how you started to enter the club.
[example: That’s why when the club officer asked me if I had the talent to pluck
those strings, I gave a shameful shake of the head.]

Tell why you joined the club.
[since I was a kid, I’ve always yearned to play the piano or the guitar.]

Share something about what you do in the club.

Give advantages of joining that club.
[example: Each helps not only to put harmony in our music but also to put
                            harmony in our relationships.]
