28 NARRATOR: Just then Young John walked by. He lived in the town
and had seen Atalanta only from a distance, but he knew how
bright and interesting she was. (YOUNG JOHN enters.)

29 2ND YOUNG MAN: Hey, Young John, are you going to try out for
the race?

30 YOUNG JOHN: I was thinking about it.

31 1ST YOUNG MAN: You’re going to have to do more than just think
about it to beat us.

32 3RD YOUNG MAN: So you want a chance to marry Princess Atalanta
too?

33 YOUNG JOHN: Not really. I just want a chance to talk to her, get to
know her.

34 5TH YOUNG MAN: Talk to her? What’s the deal with that? (MEN
scoff at him.)

35 YOUNG JOHN: I just don’t think it’s right for Atalanta’s father to give
her away as a prize. She should get to choose who she wants to
marry, or even if she wants to get married at all.

36 1ST YOUNG MAN: That’s really weird. Let’s go, guys.
(YOUNG MEN exit.)
