has his pick. Among many others, he chooses Heracles, an extremely
strong man wielding a club (whom you may know as Hercules);
Antaeus, a giant of a man carrying a huge axe; and Atalanta, an
extremely fast runner and a famous huntress with a bow and arrow.
19 Jason: I thank you all for coming on this quest with me. It is time to
take the throne from my traitorous uncle and restore it to me, its
rightful heir.
20 Atalanta raises her voice to be heard over the cheers of the heroes.
21 Atalanta: We are honored to be chosen for this noble endeavor,
Jason!
22 Heracles: Plus, some of us can’t resist an impossible quest!
23 Antaeus: The more dangerous, the better!
24 Jason: Well, in that case, you’re in luck. The object of our quest is the
Golden Fleece, which sits atop a beautiful oak tree in a faraway land at
the edge of the world, guarded by a fire-breathing dragon who never
bothers to sleep. They say this dragon can reduce men to ash before
they have time to scream in terror.
25 Heracles: (chuckling) Who screams in terror over a dragon? (Then:)
How strong is it?
26 Atalanta: How fast can it move?
27 Antaeus: How big is it?
28 Jason: I don’t know how strong, fast, or big the dragon is. But I warn
you, friends. We are going to the edge of the world, beyond what is
known. You may never see your beloved Greece or your families again.
Our chances of survival are slim.
29 Atalanta: “Slim” is not none. We are made for quests such as this!
30 Jason laughs, and the heroes cheer again.
31 Jason: Then let me introduce you to the magnificent vessel I have built.
32 Heracles: She is a beautiful ship. The Argo is her name? I suppose that
makes us Argonauts.
33 Antaeus: “Argonauts.” Well said. When we succeed in our quest, we
shall be known as the Argonauts throughout history!
34 The Argonauts cheer again as they make their way onto the Argo.
