93 Jason: I am honored that you would bring me this information, especially
since it means defying your father. You have a true heart.
94 Jason smiles at her, and Medea nearly melts.
95 Medea: The strength of my desire to help you overwhelms and mystifies
me, Jason. But nonetheless, I have brought something to protect you in your
trial. You must put this oil on your body as well as your sword and shield.
Not only will you be protected from fire and hooves of bronze, but you will
feel you could take on the very gods themselves. And when the bronze
army rises from the ground, all you need to do is toss a boulder amongst
them and the rest will take care of itself.
96 Jason: Medea, I hardly know how to thank you. Know that when we are
back in Iolcus, you will be revered by all who reside there. For it will be
thanks to you that the Argonauts and the Golden Fleece have safely
returned home.
97 Medea clasps Jason’s hands, then pulls her hood up.
98 Medea: I must return before I am discovered. Sleep well in the knowledge
that you will be well protected tomorrow.
99 Jason watches as Medea hurries off the Argo and disappears into the mist.
SCENE 7
100 Storyteller: The next morning, an excited crowd of Colchians gathers to
watch Jason’s trial. King Aeetes, dressed in his finest armor, is accompanied
by Medea. As she stands next to her father, she is wracked with guilt over
the fact that she betrayed him. And yet even now, she is overwhelmed by
love for the handsome stranger. As Medea is lost in her torment, Jason
covers himself and his weapons with the oil she gave him.
101 Atalanta: (to Jason) How do you feel? Is the oil working?
102 Jason stands tall as the oil seeps into his skin. He begins to feel strength and
courage rushing through his veins.
103 Jason: It is indeed. I feel I could take on an entire army by myself and come
out the victor!
104 Heracles: I am glad of that, for that is exactly what you are about to do.
