117 Medea: He has accomplished what you asked, Father. Now you must
honor the terms of the trial and give him the Fleece.
118 King Aeetes turns to his daughter, but she is not looking at him—she is
staring at Jason. Suddenly everything becomes clear. Rage turns his eyes to
fire as he grabs his daughter by the chin and forces her to look at him.
119 King Aeetes: Though this was all quite entertaining, I think I will
enact a new plan. I will keep my Golden Fleece, and kill Jason and every
last one of his Argonauts. And perhaps, dearest daughter, you will
perish along with them, for I scarcely doubt Jason could have
accomplished this task without your help.
120 With that, King Aeetes departs the field, leaving Medea breathless with
terror over what will happen next. Her eyes turn back to Jason, and she
knows what she must do.
SCENE 8
121 As the Argonauts celebrate, Medea approaches, trying to stay as calm as
she possibly can.
122 Medea: May I congratulate you on a victory well earned, Jason.
123 Jason: Thank you, Medea. And thank you for your help—without you,
it would not have been possible.
124 Jason notices that she is trembling.
125 Jason: Are you all right? It seems perhaps you are not well.
126 Medea: I fear you may need my help yet again. It seems my father has
no intention of honoring the agreement he made with you.
127 Heracles: And this man calls himself a king?!
128 Atalanta: He would not be the first ruler to have made promises he
never intended to keep.
129 Medea: You must get the Fleece and leave before he kills you. All of
you, and—
130 The Argonauts grab their weapons, ready to hunt down and kill King
Aeetes immediately.
131 Jason: Hold! Let us hear what else Medea has to say!
132 Medea prepares herself to say what she must say, torn between sorrow
over the betrayal of her father and love for the man who stands before her.
