133 Medea: I can help you get the Fleece, but you must understand that my
father now knows I have helped you, and I will have to flee Colchis or
he will kill me, too. Will you take me with you to Iolcus, Jason?
134 Jason takes Medea’s trembling hands in front of the Argonauts.
135 Jason: Medea, as thanks for all you have done for the kingdom of
Iolcus, you shall be my queen, by my side as I take the throne. And even
that will not be enough thanks for what you have done for my people!
136 Tears of joy and sorrow stream down Medea’s face.
137 Medea: Then let us go now. There is no time to waste.
SCENE 9
138 Storyteller: Jason and Medea arrive at the sacred
grove of oak trees where the Golden Fleece lies atop
the tallest tree, glowing as if it were the sun itself.
But no sooner does Jason lay eyes on it than the
famed sleepless dragon unfurls itself from
under the tree, spitting flame and emitting a
roar that can be heard for miles. Terror
strikes Jason’s heart as the dragon snaps at
him with massive jaws, wanting nothing
more than to devour him whole. Jason claps
his hands over his ears, sweat rolling down his
face as flames shoot from the dragon’s mouth.
139 Jason: Medea! How can we possibly tame
this beast?!
140 Medea: I will show you! But stay back—move no closer!
141 Medea falls to her knees and begins to sing a beautiful song. Slowly,
the dragon’s eyes close. It tries to fight the power of her song, its mouth
opening and closing more and more slowly until it finally crashes to the
ground in a deep sleep.
142 Medea: Now, Jason! Now!
143 Jason rushes to the magnificent oak tree, climbs it in a flash and grabs the
Fleece. It glows in his hands, mesmerizing him before he shakes himself
out of his reverie and drapes the long, heavy fleece over his shoulder. He
takes Medea by the hand and dashes out of the grove, leading her to the
Argo as fast as his feet will carry him.
