105 Across the field, King Aeetes turns to his
daughter, unable to contain the wicked glee
he feels.
106 King Aeetes: Jason will be incinerated
before the trial has even begun!
107 At that instant, Jason cannot stop
himself—with the battle cry of a great
warrior, he rushes onto the field toward
the bulls. They stamp and snort, fire
shooting from their nostrils, bronze
hooves kicking, horns aimed toward his
heart. Jason easily withstands their attack,
fending them off with his shield. The Argonauts
leap to their feet to cheer.
108 Atalanta/Heracles/Antaeus: For the throne
of Iolcus!!!
109 Jason grabs the bulls by their horns and brings them to their knees, quickly
yoking them together. Then he guides the raging bulls across the field,
forcing them to plow it for him.
110 King Aeetes: How can this be?! Medea: I cannot say, Father. He is
clearly . . . extraordinary.
111 King Aeetes: (furious) It is luck, not skill. And it will never hold. He
can’t possibly survive what comes next.
112 As Jason drops the dragon’s teeth into the plowed earth, an army begins
to spring up from the ground and lunge forward to attack Jason.
113 King Aeetes: Destroy him!
114 Medea: (whispering to herself) Jason, I beg you, do not forget what
I told you—
115 As if he could hear her, Jason picks up a boulder and throws it into the
fray. The boulder crashes into the army, causing momentary confusion.
Jason takes the opportunity to rush in and put an end to the bronze-
covered enemy. A roar of anger rises from the Colchians, but it is no
match for the cheers of the Argonauts. They run to Jason, pick him up,
and carry him across the field on their shoulders. King Aeetes seethes.
116 King Aeetes: This is not possible! This cannot be!
