SCENE 3
35 Storyteller: It is a wild journey that takes the Argonauts across the
Black Sea to Colchis. Along the way, they narrowly escape being
crushed between the Symplegades /sim•PLEG•uh•deez/, two huge
rocks rising up out of the ocean that delight in crushing ships that pass
between them. After many days at sea, Jason and his Argonauts finally
arrive at Colchis, the kingdom at the edge of the world. It is ruled by
King Aeetes, who despises strangers. (Probably because they are always
trying to take his Golden Fleece. Which is, of course, exactly what Jason
and the Argonauts are trying to do.)
36 Jason rises and stands at the front of the Argo, addressing the heroes.
37 Jason: Argonauts! Colchis lies ahead!
38 Atalanta: Let us now see what fate has in store for all of us.
39 Antaeus: Well we know one thing that’s in store—a sleepless, fire-
breathing dragon.
40 Atalanta: If I didn’t know you better, Antaeus, I’d think you were . . .
concerned.
41 Heracles: We were handpicked for this quest. If we can’t secure the
Golden Fleece, no one can.
42 Jason: We now embark on the most perilous part of our quest. If we
succeed, we return to Iolcus where I shall be king—
43 Atalanta (quietly): If King Pelias is true to his word.
44 Jason: —and will handsomely reward you for your loyalty.
45 Heracles: Return to Greece with the Golden Fleece, or perish with
honor!
SCENE 4
46 The Argo rests on the shores of Colchis as Jason and Heracles stand in
front of the beautiful palace of King Aeetes, covered in vines and blooms,
surrounded by fountains.
47 Heracles: (in awe of the beauty) Is that a fountain . . . of nectar?
48 Jason: I believe it is. And one of milk, and one of oil. This doesn’t look
like the palace of a ruthless king—perhaps this will not be the difficult
task I originally thought.
