76 Medea: Is this to be my fate? Am I to betray my family for this man I
seem to love? I can think of nothing but how to help him, which goes
against my father’s wishes. And yet, I cannot seem to stop myself. I . . . I
must protect him!
77 Medea wraps herself in a hooded robe and goes to her door.
SCENE 6
78 On the Argo, Jason recounts the details of the trial to come. The
Argonauts are not pleased.
79 Antaeus: It is more of a death sentence than a trial.
80 Heracles: Not with us by his side!
81 Atalanta: Did King Aeetes not say that Jason must do this alone?
82 Jason: He did, and Heracles knows as much, though I appreciate the
offer of help.
83 Heracles: Then we must kill King Aeetes before the trial—
84 Antaeus: —and take the fleece ourselves.
85 Jason: No. I must do this with honor, and accomplish what he asks. But
do not fear, Argonauts, for I believe we have the gods on our side.
86 No sooner have the words left his mouth than a messenger in a hooded
robe arrives on the ship. The Argonauts leap to their feet.
87 Heracles: Announce yourself!
88 The messenger throws back the hood of her robe—
it’s Medea.
89 Medea: I am here as a friend. May I speak with
you, Jason? Alone?
90 Jason: Of course. I am eager to hear what
you have to say, daughter of King Aeetes.
91 Jason and Medea move away from the
Argonauts. Medea takes a deep breath, trying
to calm her nerves, for she is about to betray
her blood.
92 Medea: I must tell you that there is a prophecy
regarding my father and his kingdom. If he loses
the Golden Fleece, he loses Colchis. Therefore, he
has given you a task designed to bring about your death,
for he is a man who will stop at nothing to keep his power.
