SCENE 10
144 As Jason and Medea approach, the Argonauts cheer and shout,
surrounding them, in awe of the gleaming fleece.
145 Atalanta: It is more luminous than I ever could have imagined!
146 Antaeus: Bright as the lightning of Zeus!
147 Heracles: You’ve done it, Jason! The throne will be yours!
148 The thunderous sound of an approaching army reaches their ears, and
Jason looks back at the shore to see King Aeetes and his Colchians with
torches and raised spears.
149 Jason: Argonauts, the Colchians approach! Make haste!
150 King Aeetes: I have come for my Fleece, you thieves! And for
my daughter!
151 But the Colchians are no match for the speed of the
Argonauts, who take to their oars and row like
they have never rowed before. The Argo
easily escapes the Colchians’ spears,
and Jason and the Argonauts are
finally on their way back to
Iolcus with their prize, and a
new queen.
EPILOGUE
152 Storyteller: You would
think, wouldn’t you, that
the tale of Jason and the
Golden Fleece has a happy
ending? Alas, it does not.
Although Jason—thanks
entirely to Medea—succeeds
in bringing the Golden Fleece
back to Iolcus, King Pelias is as
true to his word as King Aeetes was to
his, and Jason’s uncle has to be tricked into
giving up his throne. But that is a tale for
another time, my friends . . .
