                         Visits to the Cave

8 The caves were opened to the public in 1948, and thousands of people
visited them. But it soon became clear that the visitors were having a

harmful effect. The gases and water vapor in their breath dampened the
cave walls and damaged the precious paintings. Attempts were made to
protect them, but in 1963 it was decided to close
the caves. Twenty years later a life-size replica of
the biggest cave was opened nearby.

                            The Caves of Lascaux
The caves of Lascaux were one of the great archaeological discoveries of the
1900s. The paintings of prehistoric animals captured the world’s imagination.
They offer us a glimpse of the lives of our ancestors in the distant past.
