GENRE STUDY Poetry uses the sounds and rhythms of words
to convey images and feelings.
• Poems include word sounds, such as onomatopoeia, to
emphasize ideas. Onomatopoeia describes words that sound
like what they mean, such as hiss.
• Poems may be organized into stanzas, or a series of lines
grouped together.
• Free verse poems do not rhyme or have a regular rhythm.
They sound more like natural speech.
