1 In 1975, ten-year-old Hà, her mother, and her older brothers fled
from their home in Saigon, South Vietnam. Their country, along
with the United States and other nations, had just lost a very long
war with North Vietnam. As the American and other military allies
of South Vietnam left the country, conditions became too dangerous
for Hà and her family to stay. They left without Hà’s father, who had
been missing in the war for several years. The family first moved to
the island of Guam, where they lived in a tent city with other
refugees, then on to the United States. In Alabama, the immigrants
moved in with their sponsor, Mr. Johnston. Hà thinks he’s a cowboy.
Next door to them lives Mrs. Washington, a kind, retired teacher
who offers to teach the family to speak English.
