Initially, they drive a hard bargain.

Alice: Hi, Mary! How did the negotiations with the suppliers end up?
Mary: We were able to reach an amicable settlement in the end. It was not easy to reach that
                  point, though.
Alice: Well, that’s perfectly normal. You’re both counting on making a favorable deal.
Mary: Initially, they drive a hard bargain. I informed them that I already shopped around for
                  better deals.
Alice: That certainly sent out a signal that you knew what you were doing.
Mary: Well, it also showed them that I meant business, and that I would not put up with a sup-
                  plier who overcharges.
Alice: Good for you. Were you able to work out the details after they agreed to reduce their
                  prices?
Mary: Yes, we were able to iron out the details the same day.
               Alice: That’s great.
Mary: We figured out a way for both of us to profit from the deal. We even grabbed a bite after-
                  wards.
Alice: It certainly sounds like you’re happy with the way things turned out.
Mary: Really, my intonation shows how grateful I am for this.
Alice: Yes, no wonder why you have a big smile on your face now.
Mary: Definitely! I owe it to you, Alice. The tips you gave me about negotiating really helped a lot.
Alice: You’re very welcome. Good luck on your future negotiations.
               Mary: Thanks! Keep in touch.
Alice: Don’t worry, I will. Take care.
