The musical was commissioned to commemorate the
100th anniversary of Ahn’s death.
The independence activist was executed by the
Japanese government in 1909 for assassinating Ito
Hirobumi, the Japanese resident-general of Korea.
Hero was a commercial success when it was performed
in South Korea. After being performed in New York,
the musical continued to travel to other U.S. cities,
including Los Angeles.
