Interlude





                 Antacids


                         Adult produces between 2 and 3 L of gastric juice daily.
                  This  juice  is  a  digestive  fluid  secreted  by  glands  in  the

                  mucous  membrane  or  mucosa  that  lines  the  stomach.
                  Gastric juice contains hydrochloric acid. A simple diagram

                  of stomach is shown in Figure 1.10. The inside lining is made
                  up  of  parietal  cells  which  are  fused  together  to  form  tight

                  junctions.  The  interiors  of  the  cells  are  protected  from  the
                  surrounding  by  the  cell  membranes.  These  membranes

                  allow water and neutral molecules to pass in and out of the
                  stomach, but they usually block the movement of ions such
                  as  H+,  Na+,  K+,  and  CI-  ions.  In  healthy  stomach  the

                  concentration of hydrochloric acid in the gastric juice does
                  not fluctuate greatly.
