Student Spotlight in Welding
SHS Junior Timothy Wilson is currently taking Weld-
ing I at DMTC with plans to be a completer in the
program and also plans to take Machine Tool next
year as well. In the spring of 2020 on a visit to see
family in Alabama, Timothy became interested in
the hobby of blacksmithing after spending time in
his grandfather’s small forge. He also began watch-
ing the Forged in Fire episodes on tv. Upon seeing
Timothy’s interest, his grandfather set him up with
his own small pre-built forge. Since then, Timothy
has learned to forge items such as square nails,
punches, J and S hooks, letter openers, dinner triangles, a fire poker, a hatchet (made from a ball peen
hammer head), 3 knives (made out of railroad spikes), and even tongs (with the help of his grandfa-
ther). He says he loves working with his hands, building and fixing things, and has become especially
interested in antique tools. Timothy has now built his own larger forge using a hand-cranked blower
from 1906. In addition, he utilizes a hand-cranked grinder from the 1920’s and an old belt sander to
increase his metal working options. Timothy plans to pursue a career in welding (and continue his ma-
chining knowledge) while continuing his blacksmithing hobby as well.
VCOM and We Are Sharing Hope SC Visit DMTC
On November 18, 2022, DMTC Health Science
and Cosmetology students spent the morning
learning about current healthcare issues with
medical students from VCOM (Edward Via Col-
lage of Osteopathic Medicine). Topics covered
included nutrition/obesity, effects of drugs and
alcohol, osteopathic medicine, lung disease,
infectious disease, and cardiac health. Students were able to gain hands on experience practicing
different skills.
On December 7, 2022, We Are Sharing Hope SC spoke to Health Science
students at DMTC about organ, eye, and tissue donation. Students
were able to learn about the donation process, clinical donation career
pathways, and ways to get involved now. Former DMTC Health Sci-
ence/CNA student Caleb Waddell was the guest speaker.
