SA ROOTS FOR NEW SHERIFF

OF THE CITY OF LONDON

Alderman Bronek Masojada was appointed one of two
Sheriffs of the City of London with effect 28 September
2023 for a period of one year. The office of Sheriff, a
pre-requisite to becoming Lord Mayor of the City of

London, is one of the oldest in existence and dates to
the Middle Ages.

The Sheriffs’ modern-day duties include supporting
the Lord Mayor in his or her civic duties and serving,
both at home and abroad, as ambassadors for the UK-

based financial and professional services industry by
promoting the UK as a place in which to do business.

They also work to promote the work of the Judges of
Alderman Sheriff Bronek Masojada the Old Bailey and the rule of law.

Alderman Sheriff Masojada was born and brought up in Durban, South Africa. He was a
pupil at Durban High School, before taking a degree in Civil Engineering at the University
of KwaZulu-Natal. Thanks to a Rhodes Scholarship, he studied at Trinity College, Oxford,
receiving a M.Phil. in Management Studies. After university he joined McKinsey &
Company, the management consultants, working in Sydney, Tokyo and London.

In December 2021, after 21 years as chief executive of Hiscox, the FTSE 100 insurer, Masojada
stepped down to pursue a more varied business life and as Chair of the East End Community
Foundation. He is also chair of Placing Platform Limited, which is driving the digitisation of the
London Insurance Market.

During his time at HIiscox, Masojada served in numerous industry roles, including as
deputy chair of Lloyd’s, the board of the Association of British Insurers and Pool Re. Elected
as Alderman of Billingsgate in 2019, he has served on the Planning & Transportation
Committee and the Children & Community Services Committee.

Jane, his wife, is a successful figurative and portrait artist. She is a freeman of the
Feltmakers Company. Alderman Sheriff Masojada’s interests include kite-surfing,
mountain biking, motor car racing and bee keeping.
