LORD MAYOR
MICHAEL MAINELLI
The current Lord Mayor of London, Michael Mainelli is a
close associate of the Chamber who has been involved
in many of the Chamber’s events in recent years.
Alderman Professor Michael Mainelli was elected as
Lord Mayor of the City of London on 29 September
2023 and took office on 10 November 2023. He
previously served Sheriff of the City of London from
2019-2021, being granted an extraordinary second
year in that office, the first time since 1228, in order to
provide continuity during the Covid-19 pandemic. He
is the 695th Lord Mayor of London.
Seattle-born, the Lord Mayor is a qualified accountant,

management consultant, educated at Harvard
University and Trinity College Dublin. He gained his PhD at London School of Economics,
where he was also a Visiting Professor. The Lord Mayor is Emeritus Professor & Trustee
at Gresham College where he created the London Finance initiative asking, “when would
we know our financial system is working?”
He co-founded Z/Yen in 1994, the City of London’s leading think-tank, to promote
societal advance through better finance and technology after a career as a research
scientist in aerospace and cartography then accountancy-firm partner and director of
Ministry of Defence research.
The duty of the Lord Mayor, both traditionally and in the modern world, is to promote
and represent the City of London as an international spokesperson. The Lord Mayor
will serve as a global ambassador for the UK-based financial and professional services
industry. During his Mayoral year, he will champion ‘Connect to Prosper’, an initiative
focused on harnessing the City’s vast knowledge ecosystem.
The Lord Mayor will spotlight the City’s expertise in areas including finance, law, art,
and engineering, while bringing together thought leaders from diverse backgrounds
to encourage innovation and global problem solving on critical challenges facing the
world – from climate change to artificial intelligence. He will also emphasise the City’s
unique role as a global knowledge connector and talent cluster, showcasing its capacity
to address global challenges and foster inventiveness within its communities.
