HOME OWNERSHIP
HISPANICS ARE FORGING THE FUTURE OF THE
HOUSING MARKET
According to data to be released Wednesday by the National Association of Hispanic
Real Estate Professionals (NAHREP), the Hispanic homeownership rate increased to
48.4% in 2021, up from 47.5% in 2019, the highest level since the mid-2000s.
Data from the 2020 U.S. Census and other sources reinforce how this segment is a
source of growth for the industry:
In the ten years leading up to the pandemic, Hispanics accounted for over
50% of the growth in homeownership in the U.S.* This trend is expected
to accelerate for the next 20 years.
According to the Urban Institute, all future homeownership growth will come
from non-White households, with Hispanics expected to account for 70% of
homeownership growth over the next 20 years.**
With US Hispanics having a median age of just under 30 years, nearly 1 in 3
are in their prime homebuying years (25-44).***
The housing markets of Riverside/San Bernardino, Calif.; Greater New York City; and
Orlando saw the greatest increase in Hispanic homeowners in 2021, collectively adding
more than 230,000 new Hispanic owner households, according to the NAHREP.
