The Tambo Tuanku
Imam Bonjol
Manuscript
Indonesia
Tambo Tuanku Imam Bonjol (TTIB) is the only manuscript in the world
written by Naali Sutan Caniago, the son of Tuanku Imam Bonjol, while
accompanying his father during his exile in Manado. This manuscript
recounts a summary of the history of the Padri War in West Sumatra
in the 19th century, containing the memoirs of Tuanku Imam Bonjol,
the personal notes of Naali Sutan Caniago, and the minutes of
important meetings in Minangkabau in 1865 and 1875.
More than just a historical record, TTIB contains a profound message
from Tuanku Imam Bonjol about the importance of peace and
equality over war. For the Minangkabau people, he was not only a
reformist leader, but also a hero who bravely fought against the
colonizers for the land of his birth. Until today, the story of Imam
Bonjol's struggle is taught in schools and remembered nationally as
an important part of Indonesia's national identity.
