The Indonesian sugar archives at the Indonesian Sugar Research
Institute (P3GI/ISRI) demonstrate that behind the global sugar trade
competition, there is actually international scientific collaboration.
Through the exchange of sugarcane seeds, knowledge, and
technology with countries such as Hawaii, Australia, South Africa,
and the United States, the superior POJ 2878 variety, or wonder
cane, was born, which is disease-resistant and highly productive.
These archives also document Indonesia's role as host to global
scientific meetings, from the 1929 ISSCT Congress in Surabaya to the
1986 Congress in Jakarta.
Innovations in cultivation, soil mapping, fertilization, and pest control
boosted sugar productivity in Java, making it the world's second-
largest producer after Cuba in the early 20th century. This success
not only stimulated the Dutch East Indies economy, but also
improved the welfare of farmers, created jobs, and strengthened
economic ties in the Asia-Pacific region. With its comprehensive
documentation, Indonesia's sugar archives bear important witness to
how science and cross-border cooperation shaped the history of
sugar worldwide.
