After the development time the excess perm lotion is rinsed from the hair
and a neutraliser applied. Neutralizing lotion is basically shampoo
peroxide and warm water. Once the neutraliser is applied to the hair the
hydrogen and oxygen molecules from the peroxide merge with the
hydrogen caps on the broken disulphide bonds and come of as H2O
(water), allowing the broken disulphide bonds to permanently rejoin with
any of the other nearest broken disulphide bonds, the hair is now
permanently reformed from straight to curly. (Fig 22.)
Neutralising.
Neutralising can happen naturally the same as with salt and hydrogen
bonds, when the hair dries in its new formation the disulphide bonds
rejoin permanently as follows; the broken disulphide bonds are capped
with hydrogen and realigned with new broken bonds in a new formation.
