Parents should have the same zeal just as the bible said of Abraham:
For I know him, that he will command his children and his
household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do
justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that
which he hath spoken of him (Gen 18:19).
So we should not compromise discipline for societal precepts.
Another problem is that too much negative discipline (punishment),
and not enough praise and rewards, might get children behaving
well, but out of fear so it should be balanced. This can lead to
problems with children's self-esteem and anxiety later in life. So we
need to have a warm and loving relationship with our children not to
create fear which can result to depression in them. So parents in
disciplining their children should diligently teach, correct and
patiently explain the reasons behind their instructions so they fully
understand and can apply it. They should also avoid the use of force
to stop any form of trait they find not right in a child because it can
only create fear and not understanding. Remember we're talking
about corrections, directing a child aright especially in a godly way,
so any method of discipline you apply that does not have a positive
or godly impact on a child is no more discipline.
For instance, parents who always beat up their children, shorn or
shout at them on any slightest provocation and you find out that the
child is getting used to it, being hardened or distancing
himself/herself from you, is becoming an angry child that is never
happy. Such parent has defeated the purpose of discipline.
