Air Resistance

n this practical session, Year 5 students used parachutes to investigate air resistance. They
explored the effect of surface area on air pressure. They made their parachutes from
Idifferent sizes of plastic bags, dropped them from heights and recorded the time taken

for the parachutes to land on the ground. They discovered that the bigger the surface area,
the more the air resistance which, in turn, affects the speed at which parachutes fall.
