question. What if God asks you what you want for your team this
season? My answer would be that Arsenal should win the Premier
League, Champions League, FA Cup, etc. Your answer would
probably be the same. God said to you – It is done! Then the
season starts, there is a guarantee that your team is certain to win
no matter what the other teams do. You are certainly going to revel
in that for the first 10 games probably until you realise that you
cannot lose no matter what! I bet you that the game will not be of
interest to you after a while. Why would I say that? It is because
what makes sports attractive and engaging is the possibility of
losing. So, they say art mirrors life; so does sport. Let’s translate
this concept to our real lives. Let’s imagine that God said to you
that you have been selected of all humans that whatever you want
comes to pass immediately. If you want a whole city full of money,
there it is. You want the most beautiful woman in the world, there
it is! You want to be able to fly like a bird, there it is! Whatever, you
can think of having, it is done! Just like the football example, you
will rapidly lose the will to live. This is the reason for the misery
faced by children of the greats because of two reasons. The first
reason is that they get everything they want without having to
stress or struggle. Therefore, when everything comes to you
without any effort, you are already in trouble. The second reason
is that regardless of the effort they put into their vocation, people
dismiss their achievement because it is down to help from the
father or mother. I have coached a lot of people through this
difficult challenge, so I understand the depth of their desperation.
Prince William and Harry have expressed the desire to just be a
normal person capable of living a life of anonymity. People looking
at their lives from outside cannot understand their desperation to
just be normal like everyone else. I do understand their state of
mind because as a coach I have helped a lot of people deal with
this difficult burden. Another man that I got the insight from is
Andrew Carnegie ‘The parent who leaves his son enormous
wealth generally deadens the talents and energies of the son and
tempts him to live a less useful and less worthy life than he
otherwise would’ Bill Gates also said ‘He would leave for his
children enough to do what they want to do but not enough to do
nothing’ These men knew what most people don’t which is the
principle I want to share with you here.
