Example 2: GU x Disney Twisted Wonderland

Game Overview
Disney Twisted Wonderland is a Japanese mobile rhythm game developed by Aniplex and Walt Disney
Japan. Yana Toboso, the creator of Black Butler (Anime), is in charge of the original concept, storyline,
and character design (Anime style). All of the mentioned elements are inspired by Disney Villains
(from different franchises) (Disney Twisted Wonderland-Aniplex, 2019). In this game, the player
assumes the role of the main character who has awoken in an unknown world called Twisted
Wonderland and is about to enrol in Night Raven College, a prestigious magic training school (Twisted
Wonderland Wiki, 2019).
Ad Analysis:
Still on the theme of Disney villains, the second example demonstrates a collaboration
between the Japanese fashion brand GU and the widely used mobile game Disney: Twisted-
Wonderland. showcasing women's fashion line of 21 different items, namely pajamas for
ladies, cosmetics, and pouches. All featured items have emblems of the Night Raven College's
(The school from the game) 7 dorms. The first look at the advertising highlights the ad's main
theme, which is the décor and general atmosphere or ambience. The dark colors, gold
decorative pieces, and western traditional/antique furniture style all work together to create
a Victorian/Goth romantic atmosphere. This ultimately represents the game's "dark" nature
since the storyline and character design are 'twisted' from Disney Villains. Additionally, many
of the visuals, such as fanciful surroundings, studying, old books, historical interior design,
gothic exterior architecture, and mystery, are apparent references to the Dark Academia
aesthetic.
