Example1: MAC x Cruella
Movie Overview
Cruella 2021, is an American crime comedy movie inspired by Dodie Smith's 1956 novel The
Hundred and One Dalmatians' iconic Antagonist Cruella de Vil.
Ad Analysis
"The thing is, I was born brilliant. Born bad. And a little bit mad." (Cruella, 2021)
Despite their evilness and devious schemes, Disney villains are iconic, captivating characters
who are generally remembered, recognized and even admired for their notable characteristics
and striking appearances. The villainous advertisement, which takes influence from MAC's
own sub - cultural heritage and Cruella's on-screen appearances, embraces dark red
shades (devilish reds), eerie metallic colors, and, naturally, Cruella's distinctive signature look
(black and white). Cruella's maniacal smile, edgy black-and-white two-toned hairdo, bright-
red lipstick, black eyeshadow, depicts high glam (a compelling aesthetic that mixes 70s glam
with the Punk Rock Aesthetic of 1970s London) with plenty of attitude, something the new
generation appreciates. The advertisement conveys not only a wickedly fabulous look, but also
a persona. When we look at the ad, we see Cruella's facial expressions have a sinister smirk
and a wicked stare. This This illustrates the duality of the Estella and Cruella personalities.
Estella was fierce, aggressive, and assertive as a child. She was also more than ready to speak
her mind, stand up to the bullies, and defend herself and what she believes in. despite her
undeniable brilliance, Estella's youth was marked by humility, shyness, and passivity after her
mother died. She then regains her confidence and assertiveness as the movie progresses, and
as she finally embraces her new identity as the iconic fashionista Cruella De Vil. From then on,
and as we near the end credits, "She became cruel and ruthless, but also rather playful and
eccentric" (Villains Wiki, 2021).
