Granny Knot



                                                                      When trying to make a reef knot and

                                                                      failing to make the second part
                                                                      correctly, i.e. not making it square to

                                                                      the first part, the result is a granny
                                                                      knot, hard to undo when wanted, yet

                                                                      not secure. See how the working ends
                                                                      poke out at right angles to the knot. It

                                                                      is said that this is how gorillas tie the
                                                                      creepers that make up their nests, so
                                                                      perhaps this should be called a gorilla

                                                                      rather than a granny!



                                                                      1 The same start as a reef knot, left over
                                                                          right and under.
                                                                      2 The left-hand working end comes over
                                                                          the right-hand working end and under.
