Pocket Guide to Knots & Splices

        Method # 1 (Left)
This is the way to make the clove hitch in the
middle of a piece of rope, but it must be

slipped over the top of the post, pole, or
        bollard.

1 In the middle of the rope make a crossing
turn or half hitch, with the rope that comes
from the left being on top.

2 To the right of the first crossing turn make
a half hitch, with exactly the same
            configuration.

3 Put the right-hand half hitch on top of the
            left-hand half hitch.
4 The pair of hitches are now slipped over

            the top of the post.

        Method #2 (Right)

One to impress your friends; a super quick
version of method # 1, without letting go of
        the rope.

1 Cross your hands right over left and hold
            the rope.

2 Without letting go of the rope, uncross
            your hands.
3 Put the turn in your right hand on top of

the turn in your left hand—you now have
a clove hitch to place over whatever you
            like.
