Packer’s Knot
Used by people packing all kinds of boxes, bundles, parcels, and
packages, the very best version of this knot is based on the figure-of-eight
knot, but an overhand knot works nearly as well. The knot with the end
tucked through forms a running loop or noose and as it is tightened
round a bundle, the friction starts to grip until the knot is as tight as it
will go. As long as the string is not very slippery, it will hold tight. To be
on the safe side, it is best to put a locking half hitch round the end after
tightening. If the package needs it, a number of these bands can be made
individually or the string can be taken round the package at right angles,
coming back to the packers
