Diagonal Lashing
This is the lashing to be used at a
crossing point, where perhaps the
poles have a tendency to spring apart.
The whole lashing starts with a timber
hitch round both poles, pulling them
together. When making the main
turns, pull each as tightly as possible,
then finish off with a couple of
frapping turns to tighten even further.
Finish off with a clove hitch on
whichever spar is the most convenient.
1 Make a timber hitch round the two
crossed poles.
2 Take a turn round the two crossed poles
pulling the timber hitch tight.
3 Make two or three more complete turns
in the same direction, pulling as tight as
possible.
4 Change direction by coming round just
one of the poles.
Pocket Guide to Knots & Splices
5 Make three or four full turns round the
two poles at right angles to the original
turns, again pulling as tight as possible.
6 Take the working end of the rope round
one of the poles so that you can make
frapping turns.
7 Make two complete lots of frapping turns.
8 Finish off wifh a clove hitch.
9 The finished diagonal lashing.
